Questions from Campus
The following message was sent to the campus community from W&M Police Chief Don Butler – Ed.
Dear William & Mary Community –
William & Mary Police received questions today related to rumors that federal law enforcement officials have recently been on campus. Here are the facts:
- Pictures shared on social media of a group of plain-clothed officers were federal law enforcement officials in Williamsburg the weekend of Feb. 1-2, 2025, conducting a criminal investigation. That investigation was unrelated to civil immigration enforcement.
- A picture shared on social media of two members of law enforcement in a campus residence hall were William & Mary Police Officers conducting their normal daily patrol activities on campus.
- Conversation on social media mentioned law enforcement in the campus library on Feb. 4, 2025. Those were WMPD officers.
If you encounter federal or local law enforcement on campus, please direct any inquiries for information or assistance to WMPD at 757.221.4596.
