Dear colleagues,
I write to share that Louis P. Messier, Professor of Education, Emeritus, passed away on August 22, 2024, in Yorktown, VA. Born on December 28, 1935, in Northfield, Vermont, he led a life marked by dedication to education, service, and family.
Prof. Messier honorably served in the USAF Air Transport Service from 1953 to 1957 demonstrating commitment to his country early in life. After his military service, he pursued higher education, earning a BS in Elementary Education from Vermont State University in 1963. After graduating, he became head teacher at Valley School in Thetford, VT where he worked with learning disabled children. Prof. Messier went on to earn an M.Ed. in 1967 and Ed.D. from Boston University in 1970. His academic journey paved the way for a distinguished career in higher education.
Prof. Messier became an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin from 1970-1972. He then joined the faculty at the College of William & Mary where he served as Associate Professor of Education from 1972 until his retirement in 2003. During his tenure, he served twice as Director of Curriculum & Instruction as well as a group leader in the People-to-People Ambassador program to China in 2001. In addition, he served on the board of The Arc of Greater Williamsburg.
Beyond his professional life, Prof. Messier was a lifelong learner and enthusiast in various activities. He was a volunteer EMT and a trained Air Scenting Search & Rescue dog handler. His passion for physical activity was evident in his completion of multiple marathons, sprint triathlons, and an ultra-marathon.
In his early 80’s he learned to play the piano and to speak French. He loved all animals but especially his dogs. He raised German Shepherds most of his life and his most recent beloved companions were two miniature poodles.
Prof. Messier is survived by his daughter, Renee Coleman (Robert) and son, Marc Messier (Diane). He was a proud grandfather to Jessica Morris, Jacob Morris, Marcel Messier and Remy Messier. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Yolande L. Messier; his parents, Louis P. Messier and Delia Messier; and his siblings, Claire Messier and Roland Messier.
A private family service will be held later in Vermont. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Heritage Humane Society of Williamsburg or the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety. Arrangements are being handled by Nelsen Funeral Home, Williamsburg, VA.
Best,
Peggy
