A cornucopia of arts this fall at William & Mary
After hosting nearly 300 events last year, the Arts Quarter at William & Mary is poised to present another bumper crop of offerings this fall.
In addition to a full slate of professional engagements, the theatre department will put on plays, the music department will stage concerts and the dance students will leap and pirouette. Add author talks, art exhibitions and poetry readings: There is something to see and do almost every day of the week. Many events are free.
The Arts Quarter’s signature series, William & Mary PRESENTS!, will showcase a stellar lineup, including banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck, who will appear with harpist Edmar Castañeda and drummer Antonio Sánchez Sept. 24 in the Glenn Close Theatre at Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall. On Nov. 8, another Grammy winner, Clay Ross, brings his American Patchwork Quartet to campus.
The Arts Quarter will also partner with the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society, the Ampersand International Arts Festival, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Virginia Arts Festival, expanding opportunities to experience world-class artistry right on campus. Audiences can now find programming and ticketing information for all events on the Arts at William & Mary’s official Facebook page.
Alongside these events, the Department of Art and Art History will present a rich schedule of exhibitions and events, beginning with a symposium on current issues and career possibilities in the field, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Muscarelle Museum of Art, Event Hall, 611 Jamestown Rd. The daylong event is free and open to the public.

The Department of Music is offering concerts and recitals by both students and professionals, beginning with the Greek ensemble, Galan Trio, on Sept. 27, who will perform the seventh installment of their Kinesis project. On Oct. 5, Brent Birckhead, a distinguished saxophonist, takes the stage of the Music Arts Center’s Concert Hall.
Next door, the Muscarelle Museum of Art will stage three exhibitions this fall including the 16th Faculty Show and Liquid Commonwealth, a collection of artworks that explore the importance and beauty of water in Virginia. The museum also offers a full lineup of workshops and lectures. See the complete schedule here.
The Hayes Writers Series will host the poet Danez Smith on Oct. 23 at Tucker Hall Theatre. The author of “Don’t Call Us Dead,” a finalist for the National Book Award, is a founding member of the multigenre, multicultural Dark Noise Collective. Then in November, the English department welcomes Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling author of several Young Adult fantasy series.
The Department of Theatre and Dance will offer Dancevent Oct. 30-Nov. 2, a concert of original works created by William & Mary dance faculty and performed by faculty, guest artists and members of the Orchesis Modern Dance Company. In November, the department will produce “The Scarlet Pimpernel,” a musical based on the 1905 adventure novel by Baroness Orczy. The show will run Nov. 20-23.
