WMPD/Pedestrian Safety

William & Mary Police sent the following message to campus on Oct. 21, 2025 – Ed.

Dear William & Mary Community –

October is National Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month. Like many universities, William & Mary sees a large volume of pedestrian traffic on and around campus. In this awareness month, we remind pedestrians to be vigilant and keep their eyes and ears open for oncoming traffic before entering a crosswalk.

As you may have seen, William & Mary Police is helping to address this concern by adding Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) radar to its tools to assist in monitoring vehicle speeds and enforcing pedestrian right-of-way laws. This initiative is part of WMPD’s ongoing commitment to campus and pedestrian safety. The primary use of the new equipment will be to warn drivers about excessive speed. Officers began using the hand-held equipment on Oct. 20.

Feedback from our community is vital to these efforts. We appreciate you reaching out should you see an area of concern. Any time, day or night, you may reach WMPD at 757.221.4596.

Additional pedestrian safety information is available on the university’s wellness website.
