Senior Vice President for Student Affairs & Public Safety Ginger Ambler sent the following message to the campus community on April 4, 2025. – Ed.

Dear William & Mary Community,

I am heartbroken to inform you that Edwin Jay “E.J.” Baum, a senior majoring in Neuroscience, passed away unexpectedly yesterday afternoon off campus.

A graduate of the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland, E.J. joined William & Mary from his home in Alexandria, Virginia. While here, he embraced a wide spectrum of student activities including playing club lacrosse, chess, and Esports. E.J. also had an abiding interest in mental health and wellness. He was minoring in Psychology and served as head of the W&M Esports Wellness Advocates team. E.J. was particularly interested in solving real-world problems by developing and deploying new technologies.

We do not have details yet about E.J.’s memorial arrangements. I will write again when we know more. His family has asked that we collect expressions of sympathy on their behalf. Please send cards and letters to The Family of E.J. Baum, c/o Office of Student Affairs, Sadler Suite 374, P.O. Box 8795, Williamsburg, VA  23187-8795. I will be sure those expressions of sympathy are assembled in a package for delivery to E.J.’s family.

We have experienced terrible loss at William & Mary this year. In the face of grief, please know there are resources available for anyone who needs them. Counselors may be reached anytime by phone at 757-221-3620, or you may access a variety of services through TimelyCare, including 24/7 on-demand emotional support, counseling and guided self-care. If a student group is interested in having a counselor present at any meeting, please reach out to the Counseling Center so they can assist.

We offer our deepest sympathies to E.J.’s family, friends, and all who loved him. May we find solace in the care and comfort of other William & Mary community members who remind us that we are never alone in our grief.
